A graduated, transparent standpipe (manometer tube) is connected to the top of the cell to monitor the water level. At the start of the test, water is allowed to flow from an initial head h_1 through the soil specimen and discharge through a valve at the base of the cell. After a measured time interval, the water head h_2 is recorded. Hydraulic conductivity (k) is then calculated using these head values and the elapsed time, following standard falling-head permeability theory.
