Distillation of Cut-Back Asphalts

The distillation apparatus facilitates the separation of volatile and non-volatile components in cut-back asphalt products and accurately determines the residue content. This process measures the quantity of more volatile substances in cut-back asphalt products. However, the characteristics of the residue after distillation may not fully represent the properties of the original bitumen mixture or the residue left behind after the application of the cut-back product at any specific point in time. A 200 ml sample is distilled in a 500 ml flask, heated at a controlled rate to a temperature of 360°C, and the volumes of distillate at specific temperatures are carefully recorded.
