It is commonly used to evaluate compaction quality in road embankments, dam cores, sub-foundation soils, and engineered fill materials. A test pit of a specified diameter is first excavated in the ground. The soil removed from the pit is weighed, and its mass–volume relationship is used to determine density. The pit is then filled with calibrated dry sand. By comparing the mass of sand required to fill the pit to its calibrated density, the in-situ unit weight of the soil is calculated. The Sand Replacement Test Set consists of a sand cone, base plate, calibration container, and sample container. The valve mechanism located at the lower end of the sand cone ensures controlled and uniform sand flow into the test pit.
