Shelby Tüpleri

Shelby tubes are thin-walled steel cylinders used to obtain undisturbed samples in soft and cohesive soils.

The Primary purpose is to recover undisturbed specimens—particularly in cohesive soils such as clay and silt. Their thin-walled structure minimizes disturbance of natural soil density and moisture content during sampling. This ensures that laboratory tests such as consolidation, shear strength, and compressive strength provide results that closely represent in-situ ground conditions. Shelby tubes are manufactured from stainless steel or special alloy steels upon request. Their sharp cutting edge allows easy penetration into the soil. The inner surface is smooth to reduce friction and allow the specimen to enter uniformly. During sampling, Shelby tubes are attached to drilling equipment and pushed into the soil at a controlled rate. Once full, the tube is sealed with caps and often waxed (paraffin-coated) to protect the sample from external effects during transport. This ensures reliable laboratory testing that reflects the true structure of the soil layer.
