Pinhole Test Apparatus

Pinhole Test Apparatus is designed to determine the dispersive tendency of cohesive soils. This test evaluates the tendency of soils to dissolve colloidally under water flow and the resistance of the particles to separate. In this way, the erosion risk is determined especially in structures such as dam embankments, earth dikes, and impermeable cover layers.

In the test, a soil specimen prepared with standard compaction is subjected to water flow with a constant head difference. A hole of 1 mm diameter is opened in the specimen with a needle tool. The water in the cell flows through this hole. During the flow, the discharge, color change, and tunnel formation over time are observed. According to the data obtained, the specimen is classified as “dispersive” or “non-dispersive.”
