Dead-Weight Consolidation Machine (Oedometer)

Dead-Weight Consolidation Machine (Oedometer) is a high-precision testing system designed to evaluate the one-dimensional compression and consolidation behavior of fine-grained soil specimens in the laboratory.

Dead-Weight Consolidation Machine (Oedometer)  is used to determine settlement potential, coefficient of consolidation (cv), coefficient of compressibility (mv), and compression indices (Cc, Cr). Operating under classical oedometer principles, the system constrains the specimen laterally, allowing deformation only in the vertical direction. Vertical loading is applied through a precise lever-arm system using dead weights placed on the loading beam. A locking mechanism ensures safe positioning during weight changes. This method provides constant, linear load transfer to the specimen over time. At the core of the device is the consolidation cell placed on a vibration-resistant frame. The cell includes a stainless-steel sample ring with ground surfaces, upper and lower porous stones, a load pad for uniform pressure distribution, and a water reservoir to maintain full saturation. The lever system ensures controlled application of weights and constant mechanical advantage at each loading stage. The lever lock provides secure positioning during load changes. During testing, deformation readings are used to generate consolidation curves (log t – ΔH). From these curves, cv, mv, av, Cc, and Cr are calculated. These parameters are used to estimate both the duration and magnitude of soil settlement. Deformation measurements may be performed using analog dial gauges or digital displacement transducers.
